Cystic Fibrosis in Moldova: Navigating an Invisible Battle
Cystic Fibrosis is a rare, incurable genetic condition that fundamentally alters the daily lives of affected individuals and their families. It is an invisible battle; on the outside, children with Cystic Fibrosis look and develop just like any other healthy child, but internally, their bodies produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus. This fluid continuously clogs and infects the respiratory tract while obstructing vital organs in the digestive system—including the pancreas, liver, and intestines. The result is a relentless daily struggle to breathe, digest food, and maintain a basic quality of life, requiring an exhausting regimen of lifelong medical treatments, specialized enzymes, and nutritional supplements.
In the Republic of Moldova, overcoming this complex diagnosis presents deep structural and financial hurdles. Established in 2010 by devoted parents, Moldova's National Association "Învingem Fibroza Chistică" (ANIFC) has been leading the charge to support patients and advocate for the adoption of modern European standards of care. Despite these heroic local efforts, many vulnerable families still lack seamless, consistent access to the essential medications and advanced medical equipment needed to manage their symptoms safely. By building strategic partnerships with local grassroots organizations like ANIFC, MEF is dedicated to bridging these critical gaps—delivering the medical infrastructure, resource funding, and humanitarian aid necessary to give these brave individuals a real breath of hope.
How MEF supports the cause?
MEF is currently procuring DEKAs Plus Softgels, a specialized multivitamin supplement essential to these patients' daily care, and aims to expand support to the additional items on ANIFC's list of critical needs:
DEKAs Plus Softgels — specialized multivitamin supplement (~€53/unit, ~40 needed) — currently being procured by MEF
Annual PARI BOY Classic replacement kit — replacement components for inhalation devices (~€65/unit, ~40 needed)
VBMax 48mm filters for Koko Legend — single-use bacterial filters (~€2/unit, ~50 needed)
PARI BOY Classic Nebulizer — (~€265/unit, ~10 needed)
Every contribution helps ease this burden and gives these children the chance to breathe easier and live with dignity.
